Roman Abramovich added to the UK’s sanctions list

The UK Government has imposed sanctions on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich – plunging the club into chaos.

Downing Street confirmed the Chelsea owner would be the subject of sanctions on Thursday morning meaning no financial transactions are allowed.

That means they are prevented from selling tickets and their club shop has been temporarily closed.

Abramovich had issued a statement confirming his plans to sell up, with a bid coming in from a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly, but no sale had been agreed upon before the government’s actions.

The sanctions have left players confused as captain Cesar Azpilicueta said it had “not been a normal day”.

With the club now unable to sell players, at least one agent has been left upset by the ordeal.

But the players overcame all of the noise off the pitch to secure a 3-1 win over struggling Norwich.

Here are Mirror Football’s latest Chelsea headlines.

Norwich talking points

Chelsea overcame the chaos of a turbulent day off the pitch to grind out a 3-1 win at Norwich and stay in the driving seat for Champions League qualification.

The sanctions imposed on owner Roman Abramovich meant Chelsea required a special licence to fulfil this clash, but goals by Trevoh Chalobah, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz clinched all three points.

It was a tie full of talking points, and Mirror Football has all the big moments covered.

Players’ response

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta says it has “not been a normal day” at Stamford Bridge after owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK Government.

The sanctions sent the club into a state of chaos just hours before they kicked off their Premier League match with Norwich.

And captain Azpilicueta was the first Chelsea player to give an insight into how the squad were handling the news, as he spoke about the sanctions ahead of kick-off.

Agent’s fury

The agent of one of Chelsea’s players has reacted furiously to the news sanctions have been imposed on the club.

The sanctions mean player transfers or loans are banned and the club cannot sell merchandise, either in-person or online.

And that has led to the agent claiming his client is “trapped” at the club despite hoping to leave in the near future.

The agent of an unnamed Blues player has questioned how his client should proceed now, and whether he’ll have any protection from the UK’s employment laws.
