The Gunners hosted rivals Man United at the Emirates in a must-win game for both clubs in their pursuit of Champions League football. But the Arsenal faithful showed their class by giving United’s star man a warm reception before kick-off.
Ronaldo was warming up in front of the home crowd when they clapped in a show of support after the death of his newborn son on Monday. The Portugal captain acknowledged the gesture before applauding the Arsenal section.
Journalist Christ Wheatley posted a clip of Ronaldo pre-match with the caption: “Cristiano Ronaldo applauds the Arsenal fans who cheer him when he comes onto the pitch to warm-up.”
The Emirates crowd also gave a round of applause seven minutes in in tribute to the legend, who famously wears the no.7 shirt for the Red Devils.
It followed another heartfelt gesture by Liverpool during their 4-0 win over Man United earlier in the week, where Reds fans sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in solidarity.
Ronaldo later wrote on Instagram: “One world… One sport… One global family….thanks, Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion.”
The forward went on to score his 100th Premier League goal against Arsenal.
