Frankston’s SkyBus Stadium has been chosen as the venue to host the AFLW’s season opener, with St Kilda to meet Richmond on Friday January 7 near the hordes of holidaymakers on the Mornington Peninsula.
AFLW pioneers Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs will clash at Whitten Oval on Saturday night while the Carlton v Collingwood match, which has opened the season in previous years, has been moved to Sunday afternoon at Ikon Park. The match will close the opening round in the Sunday twilight slot of 4.10pm.
The Blues’ home ground will not host night matches this season due to redevelopment works.
St Kilda CEO Matt Finnis said the Saints were rapt to open the season in their bayside heartland.
“SkyBus Stadium played a key role in the establishment of our women’s football program, so to be able to take a home and away AFLW match back to that venue and play under its spectacular new lights will be a very special occasion,” Finnis said. St Kilda’s home ground in Moorabbin is unavailable until February due to redevelopment.
The Eagles and Fremantle will play a night derby in round eight, which is Indigenous round. The AFL hopes Western Australia’s border restrictions will have eased by then, with the match scheduled to be played at night on Saturday, February 26.
The fixture for the 10-round season will be released on Thursday afternoon.
