From Longchamp to Cowra for Diggers Cup hope

An imported seven-year-old which began his career in France can break back into the winner’s circle after a 15-month absence at Sunday’s feature Cowra meeting.

Obelos, which is now in the stable of James Ponsonby at The Oaks, lines up in an open Diggers Cup over 1375m having last saluted in mid-December 2020 in a benchmark 83 at Orange.

That was his third win in five starts during a spring campaign that had him gearing up for a crack in metropolitan company.

But as quick as Obelos struck form, he lost it. He was well out of the placings in 10 runs in 2021 before showing some sort of return to his best in a strong closing effort resuming at Wagga seven weeks ago.

Obelos then hit the line nicely in a benchmark 75 Federal at Canberra before working home stylishly in a good quality benchmark 64 at Wyong.

The gelding made his debut at Longchamp nearly four years ago and is with his third trainer Down Under.

He looms as one of several value chances in the up at benchmark 74 level.

Other chances include Hawkesbury six-year-old Zouologist, which is on the six-day back-up, Wagga five-year-old Blitzar, which drops back from Country Championship Qualifier, and Gosford four-year-old Alpha Go, which resumes off two improving trials.

Elsewhere on the card, which could be hit by heavy rain, in-form Todd Smart saddles up progressive three-year-old Loose Love third up since spring in a competitive class 2 over 1375m.
