The Instagram post read: “Wishing Her Majesty The Queen a very happy 96th birthday today!

“An inspiration to so many across the UK, the Commonwealth and the world, it’s particularly special to be celebrating in this Platinum Jubilee year.”

  • Harry and Meghan to join Queen at last Trooping the Colour

Trooping the Colour has marked the reigning monarch’s official birthday for over 260 years.

In recent years, the balcony at Buckingham Palace would contain the QueenPrince Philip, their four children and their partners, their children and their partners and the monarch’s great-grandchildren.

It’s reported that Prince Charles would change this when he ascends the throne. It’s thought that he would only have those in line to the throne i.e. the Cambridges and their children.

The Queen, who turns 96 on Thursday, is therefore keen to have Meghan and Harry attend as it may well be the last one they can.

As the couple stepped into their chauffeur-driven car a female broadcaster shouted: “Sir, does the Queen need protecting?”

The duke and duchess did not respond and continued into the vehicle before being driven away.

When asked if he missed the Prince of Wales or Duke of Cambridge, Harry, who is in the Netherlands hosting his Invictus Games, side-stepped the question and said he was focused on the competitors and their families.

His comments are likely to deepen the rifts between the duke and the institution of the monarchy and his family, who until a few years ago appeared to have his backing.
