Hawks coach Mitchell lauds effort

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has praised his team’s maturity after fighting its way to a nail-biting win against premiership contenders Brisbane.

The Hawks came from four goals down to take the lead early in the last quarter and then fought off several lead changes before eventually running out five-point winners.

Hawthorn belted Port Adelaide by 11 goals earlier in the season, and surprised arch-rivals Geelong with a stirring Easter Monday win.

It’s Hawthorn’s first win since that victory over the Cats in round five, but Mitchell said he didn’t lose faith in what he and his coaching staff were trying to achieve.

“We’ve had some good patches in games and we’ve been in most of the games we’ve played this year, but I was really pleased with the maturity of the group that they were able to play all the way to the end with a lot of different things happening in the game,” he said.

“I thought the boys just handled it really well, and we played with a high level of effort and intent … I was really pleased.

“I didn’t really think about the losses … we’ve just been trying to make progress in how to get better as a club and how to get better as a team and progress with a relatively young group.

“I think the way we’ve been able to make progress each week has been a step in the right direction. We get a win today, but that doesn’t say that it’s a full product; we’ve got a lot of work to do on our game and there were certain aspects of today that weren’t at the level that we require.”
