Horror tornado leaves six dead after destroying homes and power lines



At least six people have been killed and four injured after a tornado ripped through rural communities.

The terrifying storm near Des Moines in Iowa, United States followed urgent warnings for residents to seek immediate shelter in the area.

A large search-and-rescue response continued near the city of Winterset at 9pm local time (3am UK time) after the huge twister made landfall earlier in the evening.

Homes and power lines could be seen destroyed and strewn across roads and fields in the aftermath of the storm.

The number of reported fatalities has continued to rise late int the evening, with two of the six reported to be children.

People in the area described how the freak weather phenomenon approached suddenly, accompanied by a sound loud enough to make ears pop.

One survivor told local station WHO TV: “It was scariest thing I’ve ever experienced. Our ears started popping, it sounded like a vacuum”

A statement from the US National Weather Service in Des Moines read: “Initial interrogation of photos and videos from around Winterset suggests at least EF3 tornado damage occurred late Saturday afternoon.”

“NWS survey teams will be out Sunday to thoroughly investigate the damage and further assess a potential rating.”
