Man City players have theory about Pep Guardiola’s future as contract nears an end

Manchester City’s players are reportedly confident that Pep Guardiola will sign a new contract and commit his long-term future to the club.

Guardiola’s current deal expires next summer and he is yet to make a decision about whether to stay beyond what will be his seventh year with Man City.

City, who beat Fulham 4-1 on Saturday in the FA Cup, are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table and on course to win Guardiola’s fourth league title with the club.

If they maintain their lead the 51-year-old will win his 11th trophy with City, but there is increasing scrutiny over how long his managerial stint will last.

Guardiola has already stayed longer with City than at his previous clubs, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and has publicly stated he will wait until the end of the season to decide his future.

However, The Mirror reports that his players are expecting him to sign a new contract because he ‘can’t walk away’ from what he has built over the past six years.

The report states that Guardiola’s freedom with City and opportunity to create a dynasty is too appealing to leave behind.

City have many of their big players signed up to long contracts and are poised to try and sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Having recently tied up a deal for Joao Cancelo, City are now hoping Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri will follow suit – but it is Guardiola’s commitment they really want.

“My future always depends on results,” Guardiola said last month when asked about his contract.

“So, play Southampton, rest a little bit then [carry on] and at the end of the season we’ll see what happens.”

He added: “I feel good and comfortable. When I’m not energetic and feel a little bit drained or tired, I’m pretty sure I will quit. But right now, I feel good.

“My decision will be taken with the club. They gave me everything so I cannot betray them. Or do anything wrong to them. That would not be nice.”
