But what would happen if we were?
In 2017, Vladimir Putin’s former aide, retired colonel Frants Klintsevich issued a shocking warning that the UK could be wiped off the face of the Earth if it was struck by nuclear weapons.
The Russian Senator claims that if the UK launches a pre-emptive strike on Russia then “not having the biggest territory, it is likely to be literally wiped out by the counter strike”.
The warning came after the former British defence secretary Sir Michael Fallon said that “in the most extreme circumstances, we have made it very clear that you can’t rule out the use of nuclear weapons as a first strike”.
Klintsevich added: “I think that the statement made by UK defence minister Michael Fallon deserves a tough response and I am not afraid to overdo it.
“In the best case, this statement should be taken as an element of psychological war – which looks particularly disgusting in such a context.”
The threat of the UK being destroyed in the event of nuclear war was further emphasised this week after Professor Andrew Futter from the University of Leicester exclusively told the Daily Star that Russian President Vladimir Putin has little to gain from resorting to nukes but warned a bloody civil war may leave him desperate.
The international politics specialist added that Russia using nuclear weapons remains a long way off.
But Prof Futter and other leading experts have revealed what the world would look like if WW3 really did break out – and how devastating the effects would be, based on a map produced at the height of the Cold War.

Professor Campbell Craig from Cardiff University reckons hoping the USA would destroy Russian missiles in time is “optimistic” and chillingly conceded most Western cities would be powerless against being reduced to rubble.
He told said: “If a nuclear war broke out between NATO and Russia and escalated to a general war, most cities in Russia, Europe, and the US would be targeted and destroyed. The UK would basically cease to exist.
“Things can go wrong and the US might be able to intercept some missiles or destroy some of the Russian arsenal before it is launched, but that’s optimistic.”
President Putin has placed Russia’s nuclear deterrent on high alert, raising fears about a possible nuclear war.
