In recent weeks, Gentleman Jack has captivated fans with the second outing of Anne Lister’s (Suranne Jones) story, who is widely regarded by historians as the first modern lesbian.
The series, set in 1830s Yorkshire, is based on Lister’s heavily coded diaries in which she detailed her various romantic encounters with women, but wasn’t decoded until many years later.
In season two, fans have seen the businesswoman attempt to settle into her union with wife Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle), but not all has gone as smoothly as hoped.
While Walker, who has a mass of family wealth, tries to get her hands on what’s rightfully hers, Lister is met with intense criticism for her choice of lifestyle and influence on her beloved new partner.
Fans have also seen the return of Ten Percent star Lydia Leonard, who stars as Lister’s former flame Marianna Lawton, who has threatened to break apart their relationship.
But as things begin to reach their climax, will there be more in store from the hills of Halifax? Here’s everything we know so far.
When is the last episode of Gentleman Jack season 2?
Gentleman Jack season two will consist of eight episodes in total, with the penultimate set to air tonight, Sunday, May 22.
This means next weekend’s instalment, which will be broadcast on Sunday, May 29th, will act as the finale of the second season.
All episodes so far are available to view on BBC iPlayer, with each being immediately added once aired on BBC One.
However, with the broadcaster having opted against releasing the episodes as a box set on the streaming service, fans will have to wait until the live slot to watch what happens.
Will there be a season 3 of Gentleman Jack?
It’s not yet known whether Gentleman Jack will be returning for a season three, with the BBC not having yet confirmed another season.
But series creator and writer Sally Wainwright is keen for more, and with the show’s unwavering popularity amongst fans, it seems likely there may be a third season to come.
‘I’d love to be able to tell the story of the remainder of her [Anne Lister’s] life up to her death when she was 49,’ Wainwright shared ahead of the season two premiere.
‘The diary is fantastic, the diary is just full of anecdotes and… she manages to find such extraordinary things in the ordinariness of everyday life because her days are so packed and so full.’
If there is to be a season three, there would clearly be no shortage of stories to tell – watch this space!
Gentleman Jack continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
